Garbage and Rubbish Removal in Toronto

There’s a gap between what the city will take and what you actually need gone, and most people find it at the worst possible moment. The bins are full. The item is too big for the bin. It’s the wrong week for the pickup you needed. Or you’ve just cleared a basement and produced more in one afternoon than the city collects in a month.

Moving Co. does garbage and rubbish removal across Toronto and the GTA, often same day. We take the bulky household waste, the piles that build up after a clear-out, the bags and boxes that won’t fit in the bin, and the old furniture and appliances mixed in with them. The crew loads it, sweeps up, and it’s off your property the same visit.

Call 905-752-7787 or request a free quote with a rough description or a couple of photos. That’s enough for a real number.

What garbage removal costs in Toronto

We price by volume: how much space the load takes up in the truck, in fractions of a truckload. A few bags and a broken chair is a small job. A garage cleared to the walls is a big one. Two other things affect it:

  • Weight and disposal fees. Most household rubbish is bulky but light. Some loads are dense and cost more to dispose of: renovation debris, concrete, soil, or a load that’s mostly appliances. Transfer station fees are a real cost and they vary by what’s in the load.
  • Access. A pile in the driveway is quick. The same pile in a basement, at the top of a walk up, or at the end of a long carry takes longer. Downtown adds elevator bookings and nowhere legal to park the truck.

You get a clear estimate before we start and an explanation of what’s behind it. The price we agree is the price you pay. If your pile is bigger than you described, you get the revised number before anything is loaded, not after it’s on the truck and you’ve lost your leverage.

When rubbish removal is part of a move, the moving work runs on our hourly rate instead: $50 per hour per mover plus $49 per hour for the truck, so two movers and a truck is $149 an hour, one hour minimum, then 15 minute increments. Details on the pricing page.

What the city takes, and where we fit

Toronto’s waste collection is decent, and for ordinary weekly rubbish you don’t need us at all. It’s worth being straight about that.

The city collects garbage, recycling, organics and yard waste on a schedule, and runs a large item collection for bulky things set out on your regular collection day. If your rubbish fits the bins, and you can wait for the right day, the city service is free at the point of use and you should use it.

Where people get stuck is the edges. Volumes that dwarf a bin after a clear-out. Items the city won’t take, or that need to be booked and wrapped in a particular way. Deadlines that don’t line up with the collection calendar, like a closing date or a tenant handover. Condo and apartment buildings where residents can’t use curbside collection at all and property management won’t accept bulky items in the garbage room. Renovation debris, which is not household waste and generally isn’t collected.

Collection rules and schedules change and vary by municipality, so check the current details with the City of Toronto or your own city before relying on them. When the city route doesn’t work for what you’ve got, that’s the job we do.

What we take

  • Bulky household waste: bags and boxes beyond what the bin holds, broken furniture, old carpet and underlay, curtains and blinds, general clutter.
  • Furniture and appliances: sofas, mattresses, dressers, tables, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers.
  • Electronics and e-waste: televisions, monitors, computers, printers, stereo equipment.
  • Garage and shed clear-outs: shelving, bikes, tools, patio furniture, BBQs with the tank removed and emptied, boxes that haven’t been opened since you moved in.
  • Yard and garden waste: branches, cuttings, old planters, broken fencing.
  • Small renovation leftovers: old cabinets, a torn out vanity, offcuts from a DIY job. For a full gut renovation with tonnes of drywall and concrete you want a dedicated demolition bin, and we’ll tell you that rather than quote a fortune to do it by hand.

What we can’t take is the standard list every honest hauler has: hazardous materials. No paint, solvents, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, car batteries, asbestos or chemicals. Those have specific handling rules in Ontario and a transfer station will reject an entire truckload with them mixed in. If we spot something on the day that needs special disposal we’ll flag it and point you to the right drop-off rather than quietly loading it and making it someone else’s problem. Fridges and freezers are fine, but tell us in advance so the refrigerant is handled properly.

Same day rubbish removal

A lot of these calls are on a clock. A tenant left the unit full and the new one arrives Saturday. A closing moved up. The bin you ordered never showed.

We run seven days a week and can often do same day collection in Toronto and the inner GTA when you call early enough, since crews and trucks are already out. It depends on what’s booked and where the crew is, so call 905-752-7787 and ask. If we can’t do today we’ll say so and give you the earliest slot we genuinely have rather than taking the booking and letting you find out on the day.

Garbage removal versus renting a bin

Worth thinking through properly, because for some jobs a bin genuinely is the better answer.

A bin makes sense when you’re producing waste continuously over days: a long renovation, a big landscaping project, a house being gutted room by room. You fill it at your own pace and it goes when it’s full.

A bin is the wrong tool for a one off clear-out. It sits in the driveway for a week looking ugly, it may need a City of Toronto permit if it’s going on the street, you pay for days you don’t use, and crucially you still do every bit of the lifting yourself. Carrying a basement’s worth of rubbish up the stairs and over the lip of a bin is the actual work, and the bin doesn’t help with any of it.

We show up, do the labour, and leave with the rubbish the same day. For most households that’s less hassle and often less money once you honestly count your own time, the permit, and your back.

Clear-outs: garages, basements and spare rooms

This is the everyday version of the job, and it’s most of what we do.

The garage you can’t park in. The basement you’d like to use. The spare room that became a graveyard for everything without a proper home. These are jobs people put off for years and then can’t believe they waited on, because it takes a crew a couple of hours and suddenly you’ve got a whole room back.

We pull everything out, you make the keep or toss calls, and we haul away whatever’s going. No judgment about how much there is or how long it’s been there. We’ve seen genuinely everything and yours isn’t the worst.

For a whole property rather than a room, that’s an estate or full cleanout, and it’s covered on our junk removal page.

Rubbish removal for landlords and tenants

Turnover work is a steady part of what we do, and it’s almost always against a deadline.

A tenant leaves and the unit is full of furniture nobody wants. A property has to be empty for a closing. A unit needs clearing before photography or a showing. In every case the constraint is the date rather than the volume, and the useful thing we offer is that we’ll schedule around it and turn up when we said.

Tell us the hand-back or closing date when you book and we’ll build the schedule backwards from it, so the place is empty when it needs to be rather than the day after. For buildings that need paperwork before a crew can work, we can provide a certificate of insurance ahead of time. If you’re out of town, we can often arrange access in advance so you don’t need to fly in to unlock a door.

Condo and apartment rubbish removal

Downtown buildings have their own rules, and they’re the part that catches people out.

Most towers need an elevator booking for anything bulky, often with days of notice. Most want a certificate of insurance from any crew working in the building. Loading docks are shared and booked in windows. Some buildings prohibit removals on Sundays and statutory holidays. Property managers generally won’t accept furniture or bulky waste in the garbage room, which is exactly why residents end up calling us.

We arrange the building side for you: elevator reservation, dock window, insurance certificate sent ahead. It’s the same routine we run for condo and apartment moves every week across CityPlace, Liberty Village, Yorkville and North York.

How it works

  1. Tell us what’s going. A rough description, a room, or a few photos. Call 905-752-7787 if you’d rather talk it through.
  2. Get a clear price and a date. We quote on volume and access, book the crew, and sort anything your building needs.
  3. We do the heavy part. The crew protects the route, carries everything out, and loads it. You don’t drag anything to the curb.
  4. It’s gone the same day. Off your property, and the space swept before we leave.

Where it goes

Not everything in a load is actually rubbish, and we sort rather than tipping the lot.

Furniture and appliances in decent shape can go to charities and reuse programmes. Metal, e-waste and cardboard go to recycling streams rather than the transfer station. What’s genuinely finished is disposed of responsibly. We won’t oversell a vague environmental promise we can’t back up, but reuse and recycle first is the default and disposal is the fallback. If there are specific items you want donated, tell us and we’ll try to route them.

Insured crews and a tidy job

Two things worth asking any hauler before you hand over a job.

Are they insured? A lot of cheap operators aren’t, which is why they’re cheap. If someone damages a floor dragging a fridge out or hurts themselves on your stairs, an uninsured hauler quietly becomes your problem. Our crews are fully insured and we can supply a certificate of insurance for buildings that require one.

Do they clean up? We protect floors and doorways on the way out and leave the space swept, not covered in the dust and debris that comes off a basement’s worth of old stuff. You should be able to use the room the minute we drive away.

Because we also handle house moves, small moves, single item moves and packing, it’s one company and one number if you need more than a haul away.

Rubbish removal across Toronto and the GTA

We collect across the region: Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville and Hamilton. The full list is on our locations page.

Seasonal clear-outs

Rubbish arrives in waves and the calls follow a fairly predictable calendar.

Spring is the big one: garages opened after winter, garden waste, patio furniture that didn’t survive, and the general urge to reclaim a basement. It’s also the busiest stretch of the moving season, so booking a few days ahead is worth doing.

Late summer brings student turnover and lease endings, which means furniture left behind in units across the city on a very tight timetable.

Autumn is yard waste, and people clearing space before the weather turns and the garage becomes storage again.

January is packaging, broken decorations, the old exercise equipment being replaced by new exercise equipment, and a lot of decluttering resolve. It’s a quieter time for us, which means more same day availability if your timing is flexible.

Renovation and construction waste

Worth separating out, because it behaves differently from household rubbish and is priced differently too.

Construction debris is dense. Drywall, tile, plaster, concrete, brick and soil weigh far more per cubic foot than furniture and bags, and disposal is charged accordingly. A small load of rubble can cost more to dispose of than a truck full of light household clutter, which surprises people who assumed price tracks volume alone.

We’ll take the tail end of a renovation: old cabinets, a torn out vanity, a bathroom’s worth of fixtures, offcuts and packaging. What we’ll steer you away from is a full gut renovation done by the truckload, because a dedicated demolition bin on site is genuinely cheaper and better suited. We would rather tell you that than sell you an expensive series of trips.

One firm limit: asbestos. Older Toronto homes can contain it in insulation, tiles, and around old ductwork. It requires licensed abatement, not a hauler, and we will not take it. If you suspect it, stop and get it tested before anyone disturbs it.

Heavy accumulation and hoarding situations

Some homes have far more in them than a normal clear-out, and there’s usually a reason that has nothing to do with laziness.

These jobs need more time, more people, and more care, both with the property and with the person. We don’t photograph them, we don’t comment on them, and we don’t rush the decisions. If a family member or a support worker is coordinating, we can work with them directly. If items need sorting rather than removing wholesale, we go slower and check before things leave.

Tell us honestly what the situation is when you book. It changes the crew size and the time we allow, and being straight about it means we arrive prepared rather than under-resourced. There’s no judgment on our end, and we’ve done enough of these that yours will not be the one that surprises us.

Rubbish removal for small businesses

Commercial waste sits outside residential collection entirely, which catches new business owners out.

Shops, restaurants, salons, clinics and small offices generate more than a residential bin holds, and municipal residential collection generally isn’t available to them. We do one off and scheduled clear-outs for small businesses: old stock, fixtures and shelving, broken equipment, packaging after a delivery push, and full strip-outs at the end of a lease.

The usual constraints are trading hours and building rules rather than volume, so tell us when you can actually have a crew on site. Early mornings, evenings and Sundays are all workable. Larger or multi site work runs through our enterprise service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does garbage removal cost in Toronto?

It’s priced by volume, meaning how much space the load takes in the truck, plus disposal fees for heavier loads and access if there are stairs or a long carry. A few bags and a broken chair is a small job. We give a clear estimate before we start and the price we agree is the price you pay. A rough description or a few photos with your quote request gets you an accurate number.

What’s the difference between this and the city’s collection?

The city collects ordinary household waste on a schedule and runs a large item collection on your regular collection day, and for normal weekly rubbish you don’t need us. We handle the edges: volumes far beyond what a bin holds, items the city won’t take, deadlines that don’t fit the collection calendar, renovation debris, and condo residents who can’t use curbside collection at all. Check current rules with your municipality, since they change.

Do you offer same day rubbish removal?

Often, yes. We run seven days a week and can frequently collect the same day in Toronto and the inner GTA if you call early enough. It depends on what’s already booked, so call 905-752-7787 and we’ll tell you honestly what today looks like. Downtown condos are harder because most buildings need an elevator booking with notice.

Is it cheaper to rent a bin?

It depends on the job. A bin makes sense for a long renovation where waste is produced over days. For a one off clear-out it’s usually the wrong tool: it sits in the driveway for a week, may need a permit if it’s on the street, you pay for days you don’t use, and you still do all the lifting yourself. We do the labour and leave with the load the same day.

Do I need to bring everything outside first?

No. We come to wherever the rubbish is, including basements, garages, attics and upper floors, and carry it out ourselves. You don’t need to bag it, drag it to the curb, or stack it in the driveway.

What can’t you take?

Hazardous materials: paint, solvents, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, car batteries, asbestos and chemicals. Those need special disposal under Ontario rules and a transfer station will turn away an entire load with them mixed in. Fridges and freezers are fine, but tell us in advance so the refrigerant is handled correctly.

Can you clear a rental unit after a tenant leaves?

Yes, and it’s a regular job for us. Turnover work is almost always against a date, so tell us the hand-back or closing deadline and we’ll schedule backwards from it. We can provide a certificate of insurance for buildings that require one, and if you’re out of town we can often work with access arranged in advance.

Do you recycle or donate any of it?

Where it’s realistic. Furniture and appliances in decent shape can go to charities and reuse programmes, and metal, e-waste and cardboard go to recycling rather than the transfer station. What’s genuinely finished is disposed of responsibly. Tell us about specific items you’d like donated and we’ll do our best to route them.

Do you take renovation debris?

Small amounts, yes: old cabinets, a torn out vanity, offcuts from a DIY job. For a full gut renovation producing tonnes of drywall, tile and concrete you’re better off with a dedicated demolition bin, and we’ll tell you that rather than quote a fortune to shift it by hand.

Tell us what you need gone and we’ll give you a clear price and a date: insured crew, no surprise fees, hauled away the same day. Request your free quote or call 905-752-7787.
