A mattress is the single most awkward thing most people ever try to throw away. It’s heavy without being solid, it bends in the wrong places, it won’t go round a stairwell corner, and the moment you get it outside you find out the city has opinions about how it should be wrapped and when it can sit at the curb. Most people give up halfway and the old one ends up leaning against the garage wall for six months.

What mattress disposal costs in Toronto
Mattress removal is priced by volume, the same way the rest of our junk removal work is: how much space the load takes up in the truck. A single mattress is a small job. A mattress, a box spring and a frame from a three bedroom house is a bigger one. Two other things move the number:
- Access. A mattress waiting in the garage or by the front door is quick. One coming down two flights of a narrow Victorian staircase, or out of a condo that needs an elevator booking, takes longer, and the price reflects the labour.
- Disposal. Mattresses have their own disposal stream and a per-item fee at most facilities. It’s a real cost and we’ll tell you about it up front rather than adding it at the end.
You get a clear number before we start, and the number we agree is the number you pay. If you tell us one mattress and we arrive to find four, we’ll give you the revised price before anything goes on the truck, not after. Photos with your quote request get you an accurate figure fastest.
If you’re booking mattress removal as part of a move, the moving work runs on our normal hourly rate instead: $50 per hour per mover plus $49 per hour for the truck, so two movers and a truck is $149 an hour. One hour minimum, then billed in 15 minute blocks. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Can you just put a mattress out with the garbage in Toronto?
Not the way most people assume, and this is where the frustration usually starts.
The City of Toronto does collect large items, but it is a scheduled service rather than something you leave out whenever it suits you. Mattresses need to be set out on your regular collection day, and the city asks that they be fully wrapped in plastic before they go to the curb, which is meant to stop bed bugs spreading between homes during handling. Wrapping a king mattress properly, on your own, without tearing the plastic on the doorframe, is harder than it sounds.
If you live in a condo or an apartment building, curbside collection usually is not an option at all. The building handles its own waste, and most property managers will not accept a mattress in the garbage room. Some buildings charge residents directly if a mattress is dumped there and they have to arrange removal.
Rules and collection schedules change, so check the current requirements with the City of Toronto or your own municipality before you rely on curbside pickup. If you’d rather not deal with any of it, that’s exactly the job we do: we take it out of the room it’s in, today, wrapped and handled by us.
What we take

Mattresses with bed bugs
Tell us before we arrive. This matters more than anything else on this page.
If a mattress is being thrown out because of bed bugs, that changes how it has to be handled and how it has to be wrapped, and it affects where it can be taken. We are not going to pretend it’s a normal job, carry it uncovered through your hallway, and risk moving the problem into the truck, the stairwell, or the next customer’s home. Say so when you book and we’ll handle it properly and discreetly.
We’d much rather you told us and we planned for it than found out on the day. Nobody is embarrassed on our end. It’s common, it happens in nice buildings, and it’s fixable.
Same day mattress removal
A lot of these calls are urgent, and usually for the same reason: the new mattress is being delivered tomorrow, the retailer will not take the old one, and there is nowhere to put it.
We run seven days a week and can often do same day mattress pickup in Toronto and the inner GTA when you call early enough. Downtown condos are the exception. Most towers need an elevator booking, and many want notice, so same day is harder there. We’ll deal with the building for you either way.
Mattress removal from condos and apartments
Getting a king mattress out of a downtown condo is a different job from getting one out of a house, and the difficulty is rarely the mattress.
Most Toronto towers require an elevator booking for anything large, often with days of notice. Many require a certificate of insurance from any crew working in the building before the concierge will let them past the lobby. Loading docks are shared and booked in windows. Some buildings ban removals entirely on Sundays and statutory holidays. Get any of it wrong and you’re standing in the lobby with a mattress and nowhere to go.
We book all of that for you. Give us the building and unit when you call and we’ll deal with property management directly: elevator reservation, dock window, and the certificate of insurance sent over ahead of the date. Getting rid of the old mattress when the new one arrives
This is the single most common version of this call, so it’s worth spelling out.
Plenty of mattress retailers advertise old mattress removal with delivery, and plenty of them do it well. But it is not universal, it sometimes costs extra, and it usually only applies if the new mattress is going in the exact spot the old one is coming out of. If you’re moving the bed to a different room, buying from a company that ships in a box, or the delivery crew decides the old one is not in a condition they’ll handle, you’re left with it.
Check before delivery day. If removal isn’t included, book us for the same day or the day after and the problem disappears. We can also work the other way round: if the new mattress arrives and you need help getting it up a tight staircase or assembled onto a frame, that’s a single item move and furniture assembly, both of which we do.
Mattress disposal during a move
If you’re moving, this is the cheapest possible moment to get rid of a mattress you don’t want, because the crew and the truck are already at your door.
People routinely pay to move a mattress they’ve already decided to replace, then pay again to have it taken away a month later. Skip the middle step. As we load what’s coming with you, we clear what isn’t, in the same visit. It matters most on a long haul move, where you’re paying by distance and a mattress takes up serious truck space, and on small moves and condo moves where you’re downsizing into less room than you had.
Where old mattresses actually go
Mattresses are one of the more recyclable bulky items, which surprises people.
A mattress is mostly steel springs, foam, timber and textile, and those materials can be separated and recovered at facilities set up for it. Where it’s realistic we route mattresses to recycling rather than straight to landfill. Some are too degraded, wet or contaminated for that, and those have to be disposed of properly instead. We won’t sell you a vague environmental promise we can’t keep, but recycling first is the default when the mattress and the facility allow it.
If a mattress is genuinely in good condition and you’d rather it went to someone who needs it, say so and we’ll try to route it to a reuse programme. Be aware that most charities have strict rules about accepting used mattresses, so it isn’t always possible.

Why not just do it yourself?
Some people can, and if you’ve got a pickup truck, a friend, a flight of straight stairs and a free afternoon, go for it.
For everyone else the maths usually doesn’t work. A queen mattress will not fit in a car. A van rental is most of a day once you’ve collected it, wrestled the mattress in, driven to a transfer station, queued, paid the disposal fee and returned the van. Mattresses are genuinely dangerous to carry down stairs alone, because they fold unpredictably and block your view of your own feet. And the wrapping requirement for curbside collection catches most people out on the day.
We do it in a fraction of the time because we do it constantly, with the right number of people and the right straps. That’s the whole pitch.
Insured crews
Worth asking any hauler before you book, because the cheap ones are usually cheap for this reason.
Our crews are fully insured. If a mattress scuffs a wall or a frame catches a bannister on the way down, that’s covered rather than quietly becoming your problem. We can also supply a certificate of insurance for condo and apartment buildings that require one before a crew is allowed to work, which a growing number of GTA buildings now insist on as standard.

How to tell when a mattress is actually finished
People often ask whether they should replace or persevere, usually while standing next to the thing at eight in the morning. A few honest signals.
You wake up stiff and it improves during the day. That’s the clearest one. A bed that hurts you at night and stops hurting once you’re up has stopped supporting you properly.
There’s a visible dip where you sleep. Some settling is normal. A trench you roll into is not, and no amount of rotating fixes a broken support layer.
You sleep noticeably better in hotels. Slightly damning, but a reliable test.
It’s over roughly a decade old. Life span varies a lot by construction and use, and there’s no universal number, but most mattresses are past their useful life somewhere in that range.
It smells, or it’s been wet. Once a mattress has taken on damp it doesn’t recover, and it can’t be donated or usually recycled either.
None of that is a sales pitch from us, because we don’t sell mattresses. We just take the old one away.
Mattress removal in older Toronto houses
Half of the housing stock in the old city was built long before anyone was carrying a king mattress upstairs, and it shows.
Victorian and Edwardian semis in the Annex, Cabbagetown, Riverdale and the Junction tend to have narrow staircases with a hard turn at the landing, low ceilings on the return, and a newel post exactly where you need the space. Third floor conversions are worse again. Plenty of these mattresses came in before a renovation closed off the route they used, or went up a staircase that has since been rebuilt narrower.
We deal with this constantly, and the answer is rarely brute force. It’s the right number of people, taking the flex out of the mattress in a controlled way, protecting the wall and the bannister, and occasionally taking a door off its hinges. Foam mattresses are more forgiving than sprung ones. Very large sprung mattresses in tight period staircases are the one combination where we’ll give you an honest heads up before we start.
Several mattresses at once
Some of our mattress work is not one bed at a time.
Student housing turnover at the end of a lease year, landlords refurbishing a multi unit property, a home being cleared before sale, staging companies rotating stock, or a family finally dealing with three spare beds in a basement. Multiple mattresses are usually cheaper per item than a single pickup, because the crew and truck are there anyway and the volume is what drives the price.
